High waisted jeans can be a hit or miss. Because of the higher rise, most people avoid them because they tend to look like "mom" jeans. Many actresses have been seen sporting the mom trend. Everyone from Jessica Simpson to Ciara and Katie Holmes have jumped on this fad. So is it really a good look? Well yes, it can be, if worn correctly. Here are some tips on how to wear high waisted jeans without looking like your mom.
IF YOU ARE PETITE
If you have a small frame or short torso, it can be especially challenging to find a pair of jeans that compliments your silhouette. A simple way to correct this problem is to choose a slightly flared style of high waisted jeans. This is an ideal fit for petite or boyish figures as it will elongate your legs. To complete this look, show some skin by wearing a v-neck top. Exposing your neck will create the illusion of a longer torso.
IF YOU ARE TOP HEAVY
Those of you who tend to be larger on top than the bottom should balance out their figure with a wide leg style. This style is great for the big busted as it will add volume to the lower half of the body. To even everything out, wear a form fitting shirt or blouse that fits close to your body instead of something that adds bulk.
IF YOU HAVE TUMMY CONCERNS
If you constantly worry about your ample tummy and think that high waisted styles will attract attention to this are, consider adding a waist cinching belt to our outfit. This will give you a slimmer look and elongate your torso. Wear this with a tucked in blouse or shirt and a wide belt that cinches at the waist and it should eliminate any unwanted bulges.
IF YOU ARE AVERAGE
When you have a well proportioned and balanced figure, you don't have to worry about this style at all. Congratulations. You are officially hated by the rest of us! You can take your pick of skinny leg, wide leg or flare leg jeans and this will only enhance your already feminine figure.
ADDITIONAL TIPS
Make sure your jeans are snug and fit well. They won't look flattering if they stretch or sag in the waist, crotch or butt area.
Note the pockets on your pants. Sure, they can make your legs look longer, but they may also make your butt bigger because of the extra fabric. Choose a pair that have pockets that are placed lower down. If they are placed too high, or are too small, this can make your butt look bigger than it really is.
Avoid washes that have any fading or whiskering on the thighs. Fading highlights this area and the whiskering will create horizontal lines across the thighs which is unflattering.
Unless you are a 5'10 supermodel, these jeans look best when worn with sky high heels.
This fashion trend is nothing new. Back in the 70's, Janet Wood and Chrissy Snow donned them in "Three's Company." And like all trends, these jeans aren't likely to stay on the racks for too long. But they are a nice change from the bum baring low rise styles. So, smile, pull up your pants and say goodbye to plumber's crack and muffin tops! At least for now!
